Clashes in Hebron leave five students in hospital
Date: 08 / 11 / 2006 Time: 16:40

Hebron - Ma'an - Following clashes between Palestinian university students and Israeli troops in Hebron, in the southern West Bank on Wednesday, five students were injured, one of which seriously.

Medical sources have told Ma'an that five young men were admitted to hospital after being shot. One underwent immediate surgery, due to a shot in his neck. The clashes started after dozens of students rallied in the streets of Hebron protesting against the occupation's atrocities in Beit Hanoun, which resulted in the killing of 18 Palestinians overnight.

In addition, the Al-Aqsa Brigades in Hebron threatened to undertake assaults inside Israel.

Lieberman: "Kosovo solution should be experiment for separation of Jew and Arab"
Date: 08 / 11 / 2006 Time: 16:37

Bethlehem - Ma'an - The controversially-right-wing new Israeli minister for "strategic threats", Avigdor Lieberman, declared on Tuesday to the Jerusalem Post newspaper that the solution that will be implemented in the Kosovo region constitutes an experiment that the Israelis and the Palestinians should take into consideration.

He said that Kosovo constituted a real experiment for the rest of the world.

Lieberman's declaration came after his meeting in Jerusalem with the Serbian foreign minister, Vuk Drašković. He continued, saying that there are many points of similarity between the former Yugoslavia and Israel.

Both ministers adopted an unprecedented position in calling Israel to pursue the experience of the island of Cyprus, which is divided between Greek and Turk claims.

Lieberman repeatedly calls for the transfer of land and citizens, aiming to form two zones – one for Israeli citizens and one for Palestinian citizens, where each are ethnically homogenous. This view has been lambasted by human rights organizations across the world, denouncing the policy idea as "ethnic cleansing".

Senior PLO member blames Israel's new "war crime" on Arab League inaction
Date: 08 / 11 / 2006 Time: 16:35

Ramallah - Ma'an - Tayseer Khaled, a member of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), declared that a new war crime was committed by the Israeli forces in both Beit Hanoun and Yamun on Wednesday.

He said that this "war crime" should remind the international community of the war crimes that the Israeli forces committed in Qibya, Deir Yassin, and Kufr Qasem in Palestine, and Qana and Marwahin in Lebanon.

He noted that the new Israeli crime against unarmed Palestinian civilians in their homes could have been avoided if the Arab League acted in a responsible way and responded to the Palestinian call to hold an emergency meeting of foreign ministers. He said the Arab League should have taken action in a similar way as it did in confronting the last aggression on Lebanon. For example, he said, the Arab League should have sent a high-ranking ministerial envoy to the United Nations Security Council in order to remind the council of their responsibilities to supply international protection to the Palestinian people under occupation.

He added that there is a chance for the Arab League to rethink its shortcoming and to apologize to the Palestinian people by calling for a ministerial Arab League meeting and to take the appropriate position.

Israeli air strike leaves another family injured; homeless
Date: 08 / 11 / 2006 Time: 16:17

Gaza - Ma'an - Israeli fighter jets have launched a strike against a family home in the al-Shu'jaeyah area of the Gaza Strip late on Tuesday night, destroying it completely. Several Palestinians were injured, and transferred to the hospital of al-Shifa'a.

Ma'an's correspondent reported that an Israeli war plane launched a single rocket at the house of Ahmad Jabari–Qassam, after an Israeli source telephoned the family, giving them just fifteen minutes' warning. The plane arrived fifteen minutes later, hit the house with one rocket, and destroyed it totally.

UK foreign secretary is "gravely disturbed by the deaths of Palestinian civilians"
Date: 08 / 11 / 2006 Time: 15:34

Ma'an - The UK foreign secretary has expressed her "deep concern" about the civilian deaths in Gaza. She urged Israel to "avoid harming civilians".

In a press release sent by the UK Consulate General in Jerusalem, the UK foreign secretary Margaret Beckett said, "I am gravely disturbed by the deaths of Palestinian civilians, including women and children, in an Israeli strike on Beit Hanoun in the Gaza Strip, in which at least 22 Palestinians were killed and many more injured. I extend my condolences to the families of those killed and the injured. "

She adds, "The British government has repeatedly expressed its deep concern over mounting casualties and civilian suffering in Gaza in recent months, and raised these concerns with the Government of Israel. Israel must respect its obligation to avoid harming civilians. It is hard to see what this action was meant to achieve and how it can be justified. "

She also urged an end to the launching of projectiles from the Gaza Strip into Israel: "Continuing rocket attacks by Palestinian militants are also unacceptable. I call on all sides to meet their obligations under international humanitarian law and to do their utmost to avoid harming civilians, especially children."
