Editorial in Palestinian newspaper calls for international forces to protect Palestinian populace
Date: 05 / 11 / 2006 Time: 12:56

Hafez Barghouti
(Ma'anArchive)
Bethlehem - Ma'an – In the editorial in the Palestinian daily newspaper, Al Hayat Al Jadida, the editor-in-chief, Haviz Barghouthi, calls for an international custody of the Palestinian people. He said that the people are living in conditions that can no longer be accepted, while the Palestinian Authority has turned into little more than a symbol, without any real effectiveness, as the occupation has become the reality on the ground.

Barghouthi declared "the occupation kept some of our soul for us, what do we need from an authority that can't protect itself? What do we need from a government which divides us? And what do we need from factions which can't protect anyone, as clans fight among each other?"

"We don’t deserve ourselves or the occupied land, the family clashes continue, the factional clashes continue, and the occupation also continues. We have lived a big lie called the PA, another lie called democracy, and a third lie called the government. The authority is without sovereignty, the government is doing nothing, I am, as an ordinary citizen, calling for the international community to intervene to protect our people from the occupation and from the government; and to protect our government from itself and to protect the citizens from the clans. I call for an international force to stop the Israeli madness, to control our case of lawlessness and bring back our self confidence to us. I call to place ourselves under international custody, as we can no longer bear the burden of the occupation. Without freedom, we can't govern ourselves."

Children tear-gassed as Israeli troops break into a school
Date: 04 / 11 / 2006 Time: 15:37

Hebron - Ma'an - Dozens of Palestinian students, and 15 of their teachers, were affected by tear gas thrown into their classrooms, after Israeli forces broke into a school on Saturday.

Teacher Ayyoub Mehalwis from Jawhar elementary school told Ma'an's reporter in the city that Israeli forces first threw tear gas canisters when they broke into the school, and then a further round of tear gas shot into the classrooms. Israeli troops closed the main gate of the school, preventing ambulances from reaching the school to offer medical assistance.

Mehalwis holds the Israeli authorities responsible for the incident, especially as many of the students and the teachers were affected by the gas. The teachers called for human rights societies to intervene, in order to protect the Palestinian children.
